Sense of Scale by John O'Connell Opens October 6

Artspace 304 is thrilled to announce our new exhibition: Sense of Scale by John O’Connell! Sense of Scale is on view at Artspace 304 from October 6 – November 10. We invite you to join us for the opening reception Friday, October 6 from 5-7pm, including an artist talk! This exhibition explores landscape photography through the theme of scale with subjects ranging from miniature insects and plants to the vast expanses of the cosmos. O'Connell's work portrays time through camera exposures ranging from motion-freezing fast shutter speeds to prolonged six-month exposure times. Come enjoy the whimsical, wild, and wonderful within O'Connell's expansive exhibition! 

John O’Connell, is a photographer specializing in outdoor landscape and nature photography, as well as an ecologist. Originally from Miami, Florida, O'Connell has resided in Southern Illinois for the past 8 years. Inspired by the patterns, light and motion of nature, John aims to show the beauty in the world around us. For more information about John and his work, join us for his reception and artist talk on October 6 from 5-7pm! We hope to see you there! 

Diurnal Rhythms at The Corridor Gallery
 

Be sure to stop in The Corridor Gallery to see Diurnal Rhythms by John O’Connell! Diurnal Rhythms, running concurrently to Sense of Scale, showcases Southern Illinois landscapes through daytime and night-time photography. The Corridor Gallery is lined with various scenes captured at different times of day, displaying contrast and balance between the presence and absence of light. You won't want to miss this visual exploration of space and time!

Coming Soon to The Neil and Mary Ellen Media and Performance Gallery

Mark your calendars - a new installation is coming! Confluence Hymn : Listening to Little Egypt’s Rivers by Nick Ginsburg will be on view in the Neil and Mary Ellen Dillard Media and Performance Gallery from October 13 to November 17. Confluence Hymn is an audio-video installation exploring the ecologically and sonically distinctive river environments of southern Illinois on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Join us Friday, October 13 for an opening reception from 5-7 pm. Interested in learning more about audio recording? Then be sure to stop in the following Saturday, October 14, for an interactive workshop with the artist! We look forward to hearing what Nick has to share! 

 

SI Arts Pollinator Project Grant Applications Open

 

Applications for the SI Arts Pollinator Project Grant are closing soon! The Southern Illinois Arts Pollinator Project seeks emerging or resurfacing craft artists, seeking to expand their production and practice with the intention to sell work. Grants are targeted to meet the needs of budding artists through the provision of $5,000 for equipment or materials for mass production of saleable artwork, access to sales through retail outlets, including Artspace 304, and a paired mentorship for assistance in marketing their work.

If you're an artist or craftsperson interested in selling your work, this grant may be right for you! Applications are only open to artists in the Southern Illinois area, and close on Friday, October 6 at 11:59pm. If you have questions or need clarification, please reach out to the Artspace 304 team!

Artspace 304 at Carbondale Halloween

Artspace 304 is happy to partner with Carbondale Halloween! We are looking forward to a delightfully spooky day of candy walks, pumpkin races, and Halloween crafting! Bring the family by 607 S Illinois Ave on October 28th from 12-2pm for a kids' make-and-take art project. All manner of goblins, witches, and ghouls are welcome!
