Enduring Passion for Art

September 13-October 21

On view at Artspace 304 is a retrospective of work from 15 members of the Art Colony, a peer-led group of lifelong students of the arts who gather weekly at Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship. While many local artists have participated over the years, the group shares a collective philosophy and approach: to create through a love for art.

Enduring Passion for Art features paintings, ceramics, collage, and fiber art by Helen Asraf, Laura Basanta, Judy Carter, Kaori Davis, Robert De Filippis, R.T. Elliott, Denny Hays, Sherry Hohman, Joan Juul, Cathy Kline, Lois May Lembcke, DeSande R, Ione Russell, MJ Smerken, and Nila Tanner.

Visions by Yvonne Alderman

August 17-October 14

Featuring wood carvings and mixed media by Yvonne Alderman, Visions is on view at The Corridor Gallery in the Carbondale Civic Center. Her work draws from her experiences growing up on the Blue Ridge and being surrounded by creative women. Paint, paper, wood, and fiber are just a few of the elements Yvonne uses to create her mixed media pieces. The title of the exhibition refers to the pictures that come to mind during her daily routines and serve as inspiration for her practice.

Additional wood carvings by Yvonne are featured on the Artist Showcase wall behind the reception desk at Artspace 304.

Who will be the next Poetry Out Loud champion?

Through educational materials, an online poetry anthology, and a series of recitation competitions, Poetry Out Loud helps high school students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history.

Registration is open for schools and organizations interested in hosting a Poetry Out Loud competition in their community! The program can be completed in 2-4 weeks and fulfills NCTE, Common Core, and National Core Arts Standards. Finalists of local competitions are eligible to compete at the Southern IL Regional Competition, hosted in spring 2023 by Artspace 304, before moving onto state and national competitions.
